The banner has a huge :apple: underneath the slogan. It is branded and definitely Apple. Something in the air is probably iTunes Movie Rentals with Apple TV or the new iMac (don't know how something in the air applies to iMac but I'm sure Steve will enlighten us) ;)

    Yeah, thanks.

When I posted, we only had a single solitary image which had no branding.

Ignore what I said, I was just speculating as I haven't seen Apple ever deviate from Myriad Pro Semibold. However, it seems they are just using a light version of the same font.

You must not be a fan of our physical universe then.

There is a substantial difference between real 3D and fake 3D. Real 3D is what you see around yourself everyday where depth actually exists. Fake 3D is the rubbish that the movie and electronic industry would like us to pay money for by simulating real 3D on a 2D display. It simply does not work. I don't get headaches from fake 3D but I do get very annoyed at it because I can see that it is fake 3D and it just looks wrong. The only place where I think that fake 3D stands a chance is on an enormous screen like that at an IMAX where you cannot see real 3D at the same time as you are staring at the screen.

Well... but at least it's not Apple's fault, because they didn't produce the driver. Therefore it's actually not a concern of Apple's but of the driver's producer's.

On the other hand Apple did include it into it's OS seemingly without testing it thorougly, and that is, of course, a concern of Apple's. So they will have to work together to get rid of that - and I'm sure they will - and I may be smug again. :p

###Just my two cents.... it is exactly this kind of "attitude" that make tech and Windows people want to throw up. Of course, it's Apple's concern and it SHOULD be yours. If it comes with the Mac...it's Apple responsibility...period. As an Apple user, i'm embarrassed more and more by the Apple community. Gonna have to start painting over the Apple logo on my PB.

I think it will be more like $79...

If it truly is a convergence, then the development should be amortized over both Mac and iOS development teams. Therefore, they could charge less per copy than they have traditionally, because the product is being applied to more systems.

But don't count on it. $129 will be the price. And when you compare it to the price of Windows, it looks like a bargain.

Whats the point in the 8 gig when you can get so much more capacity for only £20 more?!
Seems fairly bizarre really, you'd have to really like little black things to bother surely!

anyone getting one care to explain your rationale?

I can fit a large chunk of my 20 GB library onto an 8 GB iPod, certainly more than I'd listen to for a week or so.
I'd like to have 24 hours of battery life.
I'd like to go running with it (hence flash memory).
I'd like to get a Nike + thang at some point to motivate my lazy ass.
I'd like to be able to fit it in my sexy lady jeans without looking like I've got a small child stuffed in them. :p

I know where you're coming from, but I just sold my 20 GB 4G iPod to pay for this, because I never used the full capacity and it was bigger and heavier than I'd prefer. I'll never watch videos on my new one. It'll be very rare if I look at photos on it. I'll never play games on it.

So, although I do like to get the best value out of things, I feel like I am with this, because I'm getting more stuff I want (size, no hard drive, better battery etc) for a cheaper price. Which is a good thing. :)

If Boot Camp is supposed to be one of the biggest new features, where is identification of it on the poster?
I see on the Far Left Top corner 'Universal' but not boot camp. I finf this strange.
Does that Universal Logo mean more then just PowerPC+MacIntel? Maybe Mac+PC? 'virtualization'?

Since Parallels came out, Apple has been downplaying Boot Camp. (In the "I'm a Mac and a PC" ad, they even now say "Purchase of Parallels required" rather than "Windows", where it implied to use Boot Camp. So before it implied using Boot Camp, now it implicitely mentions Parallels.)

We won't see Apple embracing run-in-place Windows apps on OS X. It just involves TOO MUCH TESTING! (Heck, OS/2 actually ran a copy of Windows, and it was flaky at running Windows apps.)

Is there anyone who actually got his serial number to be confirmed as a faulty one? I keep getting a " This serial number is invalid or does not qualify for the program."

While my serial number starts with 6C5353... which as far as I can check fits into the range of valid iBook battery serial numbers.

I just installed ClickToFlash (http://rentzsch.github.com/clicktoflash/) on all my Macs and my browsing experience has dramatically increased 1000% for the better. No more intrusive pop-up ads, distracting animations, and more importantly, long-loading, resource-intensive, useless, gimmicky intros and gadgets... unless I specifically ask for it.

I can only imagine what would happen if Flash apps on the iPhone didn't have such an ability to be optionally downloaded, let alone execute upon it loading. It's bad enough that AT&T's bandwidth is horrendous at times, I don't need to waste half a megabyte just downloading an advertisement.

    +1
ClickToFlash is Awesome. My computer runs so much cooler now that I've installed it.

Thanks Jason. I have 2 150watt strobes, softbox covers and umbrellas as desired. Do your strobes have light sync? One trick I've discovered is to mount a flash on my camera hotshoe (facing up or away) and it's flash will trigger the strobes. I have a sync cable to one flash and use light sync for the other anyway.

I read books off electronic devices all the time. The first machine I used was the Nokia 9500

    http://reviews.zdnet.co.uk/i/z/rv/2004/09/nokia-9300-400x480.jpg

    That's actually a Nokia 9300 but it's similar.

Having the right software is crucial. It needs to be tweakable to show the text at exactly the right font size.

I found it easier to hold the phone vertically not horizionally, and read the text like a vertical newspaper column.

The way the page is turned is crucial too.

Some software can scroll it automatically for you (you pickthe scroll speed, but sometimes it's just a little too fast or a little too slow)- thats suitable for undemanding books or ones where you can read at the same rate for all the way, but for most books manual turn is preferable.

The button to click to turn pages has to fall under your thumb or the right finger to make it an automatic action. For technical books, you need to be able to scroll back and forwards without changing your hand grip.

An unobtrusive system of marking your place, making notes, or marking paragraphs that you want to return to later is also important, but not always available.

When I got fed up with the Nokia 9500 being too big, (and I broke mine) I brought the O2 XDA Mini S

    http://www.mobiles.co.uk/cache/2006-07-20-18-06-20/b582200e-0a96-4845-9f49-0ba9d7df606d/o2-xda-mini-s.jpg

It has a tiny screen, 1.5 inches x 2.25 inches (45mm x 65mm) which is getting to be about the same size as the iPod video but I can still read books on it, and have read about 20 so far. I'm very short sighted but I can read it without glasses - just hold it a bit closer.

That tiny screen is probably too small for most people, so I hope Apple's is a bit bigger.

I have a friend who uses his old Palm PDA solely for reading - never mind all the pda functions - he only uses it for reading ebooks.

I would guess that if they bump the iPhone's camera there is some other benefit since Apple generally doesn't play the specs game. Is 8MP enough for decent 1080p video?

    I didn't think Steve Jobs rated 1080p?

Has he not said that 720p is good enough for everyone in his opinion?

I personally think with the uptake of more Apple systems and the perception of better security on Apple systems many people see this as a challange to break a Mac (ala Hack a Mac).

But wait! Doesn't Apple's miniscule market-share mean that hackers won't target Macs because there is nothing to be gained? Better off targeting the 95% of Windows-running machines out there? I think this story proves again that the "security through obscurity" argument is just a myth. :)

Especially when iPods first hit the scene, price was a big issue for a lot of customers. Apple products have always been on the pricey side. So perhaps the popularity of the larger capacity iPods was impacted by the pricing structure, which impacted Apple's perception of the demand.

Apple's non Mac consumer electronics are not boutique/luxury goods and haven't been for a long time. They're cheaper than competitor hardware with similar specs. Even Samsung CE, a member of Samsung Group which makes the most expensive components that go into Apple's consumer electronics, can't compete with Apple on price due to Apple's volume and pre-emptive supply chain lockup.

It's getting kindof absurd seeing that hard drives keep getting bigger and cheaper. Would an iPod Touch really be that much thicker if it had 128 GB? And just how thick would (dare I say it) a 500 GB iPod Touch be? For the way I would use the device, I wouldn't mind a little extra thickness and weight.

iPod Classics = HDD based storage. iPod Touches = solid state based storage.

You might not mind the extra thickness and weight of HDD based Touch but you'd definitely mind the slower speed. Flash based 500GB? You would definitely mind the price.

WOW! Guys please go and read the 10-year old forums, it's amazingly fun!

    There are comments like:

"I still can't believe this! All this hype for something so ridiculous! Who cares about an MP3 player? I want something new! I want them to think differently!
Why oh why would they do this?! It's so wrong! It's so stupid!"

It's totally like any other new product announcement today :D

On topic: I think Apple has some amazing ideas, but also that they don't hesitate to ditch them for something new if they think it's better. I think this is the only way to evolve in today's world. Most companies stick to their traditional stuff and keep pushing it even if it's not as good as it could be, just because it was some great idea they had many years ago. Apple has absolutely no respect for tradition and will always be the first to replace one of their best inventions with something totally different. I find this admirable and dangerous at the same time, but so far it had worked great for them.

While many people will still stick to traditions, Apple won't. Rationally, the click-wheel has no real advantage over a touch screen. It's slower to navigate a menu if you have to scroll through it, rather than just press whatever you like. Yes, it is awesome and you got used to it and it looks nice, but Apple won't care for that. It's good and bad at the same time.

By the way, just to be sure... this runs on 10.6, yes? I didn't see any mention of requiring Lion but I may have missed it.

(That'd be key, as there's some apps that are still Rosetta that we use, and 10.7 drops PPC application support.)

OK, this is getting a bit..... I take back what I said earlier in the thread about CoreDuoTemp matching FanControl's temp readings.

FanControl says 55C, CoreDuoTemp says 37C. Firmware is 1.1.

Does anyone really know what the two are _actually_ measuring? I mean, the differential makes sense if, for example, CoreDuoTemp is measuring the chips temperature, while FanControl is measuring the heatsink.... but does anyone have hard facts what's actually being measured??? :(

Is there a technical document that shows which sensors are installed in the MB? I can't find any, but maybe someone else has a clue.
